A commission for the Science Museum in London to accompany my Foucault's Pendulum exhibit The Earth Rotating, and I With It
-
Picture the spherical earth as a flat map, and then imagine the pattern of sunlight and darkness caused by the earth’s constant rotation around its axis. Every 24 hours, each point on earth experiences a sequence from day to night to day again. The pattern on this bench represents a full 24 hour rotation of the earth, from dusk to nighttime and dawn, through twilight to sunrise and daylight, and finally to sunset followed by twilight and dusk again.
